Europe River Cruising has had massive growth for Australian travellers over the past few years, and there are a number of reasons why so many Australians are choosing to include a river cruise in their European holidays, either as a stand-alone holiday, or perhaps as part of a combination of travel styles, like my own family holiday last Christmas, combining a coach tour with a river cruise, and some train trips and a few nights in Paris – WE LOVED IT! Here are a few of the "good things” about river cruising: you only unpack once, you sleep in the same bed every night, all meals are included, many river cruises include free wine, beer and soft drinks with dinner (and even with lunch, if you are on a Scenic Space-Ship river cruise), many river cruises include the cost of the "optional” tours and also gratuities are often included on a river cruise, depending on the operator of the river cruise. Also your "hotel” moves along at night, so you spend less time travelling and more time exploring during the day. Another major advantage is that when Europe was growing – and I’m talking about hundreds of years ago, not a few years ago – the place where the villages and towns and cities started growing was on the river, because they needed water for drinking, for washing, for transportation, for grinding grain and many other reasons, so when you get off your river cruise ship, you are often right in the very centre of the village, town or city, and can start exploring immediately.

Some of the "bad things” about river cruising is that naturally you are reasonably limited as to where you can visit while touring Europe – obviously you can’t travel too far from a river system, and you can’t do the "grand tour of Europe” in three weeks, like that movie "If today is Tuesday, this must be Belgium”! However, having said that, many river cruises do include a day tour or two by coach to exceptional "must see” places like Cesky Krumlov or Salsburg.

I guess this is one reason why so many of our club members are choosing to combine a coach tour with a river cruise, or maybe combine a Mediterranean cruise with a river cruise, depending on where they want to explore in that amazing continent, to satisfy their own personal travel DREAMS.
